The reasons Americans don't see Swiss wines in their local wine stores or restaurants. Switzerland, particularly the Lavaux region, which is located in the Francophone south, has beautiful white wines. However, these wines are only produced in small batches. Le levaux wine is an integral part of the local culture.

The first reason to visit the region is to taste the distinctive whites made from the Chasselas grape. They are light and crisp, with nice minerals and a salty touch. These white wines are low in alcohol and may be called "easy to drink" o" wine of thirst" by winemakers.

The second reason is the breathtaking beauty of Lavaux itself. This can be seen in its ascent from the infinite blue of Lake Geneva. These vineyards are some of the steepest in the world, towering more than 1,100 feet above the lake. They have landed in 40 levels.

This 14-kilometer-long Lavaux region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a unique blend of tradition and beauty. Wines are still made in the same way as when Benedictine and Cistercian monks made them in the 11th century. There was no irrigation and very few chemicals. One particular walk through them was named one of the ten most beautiful in the world. (Disclaimer: Switzerland Tourism invited me to visit the area last month.

Another selling point is the nine-mile distance. The wine cart is available, but the pleasures of Lavaux are best explored on foot. Walking through the vineyards, with occasional stops at wineries or traditional pubs to sample, is the preferred way to discover the region. Blaise Dupoux (17th generation winemaker) is worth a visit. Although its balanced wines are not the most emblematic of the region, they are among the best.
